Tennis Biography

Shortly after forming the National Urban Youth Tennis Foundation George Henry came to appreciate the depth of his commitment to tennis, the game and the business.  It was then that he realized the value of the experience he has gained over the years as a player, coach and administrator.  It was then that all the pieces came together.

As a player, George realized that it wasn’t enough to just hit textbook perfect strokes.  He also had to have a clear head and a healthy body to be competitive.  As a college player, he developed a camaraderie with his team members.  Even though only a freshman, he quickly became a team leader and the person that his teammates looked to for inspiration and support.  Later, as a player on the satellite circuit, alone, without the benefit of a team and a coach, he again relied on his personable qualities to unite other players in a similar situation to his.  They formed an informal group that was able to share and limit expenses for travel and lodging, but most of all, to provide coaching and support to each other.

As a coach to players on the circuit, George was able to draw on his own experience as a player to identify with his players.  Thus he was able to not only work on developing their on-court skills, but also to help them deal with the competitive aspects of the sport and the pressures involved in keeping focused while traveling and being away from home for long periods of time.   George has also had the benefit of coaching men and women and is familiar with the different demands on their respective circuits.

Finally, as an administrator, he was able to utilize his skills as a player and coach and take it to another level.  Drafting the proposal by which he was able to secure the contract with the City of North Miami and enabling him to base his Foundation out of Pepper Park, he realized the value of his diverse experience.  He built a program from the bottom up.  He secured the site, the financing, the equipment and the staff.  He presented programs tailored to the needs of the North Miami community, for children and adults of all ages, ethnic backgrounds and skill levels.  He was able to expose novice players to the sport of tennis and introduce them to players and coaches who had already made their marks in the world of tennis.
